HUSBANDRY

Fortunately for me when we moved here in 2004 there was already a large ‘workshop’ the whole width of the garden.  This was originally split into three and easily accommodated various sized hutches.

This year, 2010, we have knocked the three into one long shed and as the front was in need of repair, we have completely ripped of and replaced it, complete with large opening windows.

Most of my hutches are six foot x two x two.  Some have dividers for the Minis but these are removed once any kits are running around.

All of the pens are coated with bitchemin  on the floor and three inches up the walls.  Then the remainder of the inside is painted thus making it easier for cleaning.

I use Stablezone on the floor before putting a good covering of shavings down.  Then a good lair of straw in placed on top of that.

After having difficulty finding decent hay after the floods of 2007 I started using Ready Grass instead and have continued with its use.

I have tried several ways of feeding and think I have now managed to put together a good quality feed.

For the mini lops and mini rex I use BATA pellets mixed with some Chudley Rabbit Royale - 4parts to 1part.

The French, who can manage a coarser mix, get equal part pellet and Royale.

French Lop does get the Minis mix starting one week before they are due to kindle, during lactation and weaning.  This gives the doe and kits a higher protein level but is also lighter on the stomach.,

We have two allotments so my rabbits get plenty of fresh greens - we tend to grow a lot of curly kale but they get other veg too, carrots, beetroot, cabbage, cauli, broccoli, etc.

Of course fresh water is available day and night.
